Three Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make At The Outset

Many entrepreneurs make three crucial mistakes at the outset. They do not pay sufficient attention to customers' preferences; they ignore their competition because their product thrill them, and third, they neglect to follow their business strategy. Harvard professor and author Michael Porter, says strategy must be unique. He goes on to mention that strategy:

• by consensus is bad strategy
• is not compromise; it's clarity
• is about choices
• needs a set of uniqueness to help to differentiate you from the competition
• Porter then adds that less than 25% of companies have a clear strategy.

Strategy doesn't have to be embedded in many pages, it can and should be plain and simple.

In his 1985 book, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the late management guru Peter Drucker (1909-2005) said entrepreneurs create something new, something different and have unique characteristics. He said McDonald's exemplified entrepreneurship; "they didn't invent anything any decent American restaurant hadn't produced hamburgers for years." Drucker continued, McDonald's asked:


What is value to the customer?" Then they standardized the product, designed processes, and tools, drastically upgraded yields, and created a new market and a new customer.
Drucker said McDonald's carried out entrepreneurship. "The rules are pretty much the same, the things that work and those that don't are pretty much the same, and so are the kinds of innovation and where to look for them."

The start-up owner often does not spend enough time finding out the value to the customer of her product or service. Neither does she spend adequate time developing and testing her strategy. Instead, she focuses on making a fast buck. That's why it's crucial the owner does the following:

• Spends time understanding who are the customers
• Identifies needs and wants, real and perceived, and target markets
• Decides how to fulfill those needs consistently and at a high standard
• Be patient and focus on the long-term. Research shows that family owned businesses are more successful than non family owned businesses because the former take a long view when making decisions.

Other things owners are doing wrong include:

• Listening to too many people with divergent views about the business
• Trying to "save" money by not getting needed resources to produce consistently high-quality goods and services
• Not taking enough time to raise adequate funds in the "proper" form. Often, they take loans from family and friends without stating clearly risks involved and repayment terms.
• Starting a business is risky but rewarding, and needs patience and courage. However, heeding the above advice will increase the probability of success significantly.

Here are 6 ways you need to consider focusing on if you want to create a more effective email marketing campaign.

1. You need to know what kind of a campaign you are going to be sending

This could be a promotion or it could be just a content series. Whatever you choose will depend on what you have going on in your business at the time.

Just remember a rule of thumb is to make sure you are not just sending out promotion after promotion day after day. Make sure you throw in some valuable content at least once or twice a week to break up the promotions and to provide value to your list.

2. Use curiosity subject lines

If you want to get more opens on your emails then you need to play it smart. Write subject lines that get attention and make them want to read more. If you tell them what the email is in the subject line do you think they will open it? Use just enough curiosity to make them take action to see what it's all about.

3. Be friendly to build relationships faster

Remember to write as if you are writing to a good friend, be friendly and casual. The friendlier you sound the faster you will build a relationship with your subscriber.

Tell them stories about what you are doing that day or something you might do later after you finish writing them the email. Give them valuable advice of something that happened to you that they can benefit from.

4. Leave a clear call to action

Believe it or not your subscribers want you to tell them what to do so don't beat around the bush. Say what you need to say and tell them what you want them to do such as:

If you are sending the right promotions to the right list of people you can see how your business will benefit.

To do this simply create a new list for each type of product you promote. Let's say for instance list building. When you send out your warming email series for your new list building product you want to have a list set up with an opt-in page (squeeze page) where you are giving something away about list building.

That way all the subs from your regular list will not be put on your "list building" list and when you're ready to sell that product you will have a hungry list of people ready to buy it. Make sense?

6. Track your results

A lot of email marketer that are just starting out make the big mistake of not tracking their open rates, click through rates, and they don't keep their list clean.

Most autoresponders these days have all the tracking you need, all you have to do is go in the "statistics" section and see how many opens you got and how many clicks.

I'm not going to tell you how to manage your list, but my rule of thumb is if no one opens any of my emails in 60 days, I delete them. Because chances are if they didn't click or open anything for that many days they never will.

Now you can also send out a win back campaign before you delete them just to see if they finally open something from you, but I'll leave that for another article.

Take a short walk or take a non-sitting break, unless you've been using a standing desk. Lying flat on your back might feel good too.

If a little more than 60 minutes is needed go ahead and finish the task before taking a break. If it needs much more time to complete put it away until next time. After you've powered through a focused hour and taken a break to refresh, you can set the timer for another 60 minutes and continue where you left off or move to another task.

It can seem difficult to find quality, relevant images for your site posts without purchasing them and that can get very expensive for a website with many pages. If we can add relevant imagery to all of our pages and posts we're going to see a lot more success in terms of the percentage of people who read our content and spend some time on our websites.

We are visual by nature. We grow up from a young age reading books that are "visual" and we never really lose our desire for this as we get older.

If you are creating pages that are an ocean of words, then you are most likely not going to attract the broad audience that's out there. You will also get less engagement from those that do read the pages as people will not immerse themselves in the content on your website.

It's best to find the free-to-use images whenever possible. After all, you can always purchase images whenever you want or need to for certain situations, but not for each page. You might be using 3-5 images per page and if you purchase each image the cost can quickly add up, so let's look at a few of the free options:

Images, likely one of the most confusing and scary aspects of building a website for many. To be honest, with a little understanding, there is no reason to feel like this. I'll show you some of the most popular sources of "royalty-free" images for your website and I'll offer you two strategies for creating your very own images, within most, if not all niches.

There are some other free stock photo sites as well, which means the images are fully public domain and you can use the images however you like. Something to keep in mind is that some authors might want you to give them credit for the photo while others will give you "full purpose" access on an image to image basis.

Screen Captures

Sometimes it's best to take a screen capture, or screenshot, to show content to your viewers. Enter "print screen key, or print screen Dell, Mac, Windows 10, Apple, etc", and learn how to take and save your files for use. On my Dell laptop, I simply press the "Windows" and "PrtScr" keys at the same time and the screen dims for a moment and the screenshot is saved in my file pictures.

You can also see if your pc has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to box off an area of a page or even the entire page and then save the snipped image to your file pictures for use on your website or elsewhere.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can take your own photos in many cases. A couple of examples would be if you were in the "dog training niche", or cats, there are plenty of opportunities to take photos at home or at the local dog park or grooming salon, etc.

If you are in an electronics niche go to the local stores and take some product photos that you can use. Another example could be food items. Make your own scene and take photos or go to a local market and get images locally to put on your website.

When you take your own photos, the image ownership and rights are yours only. So take as many of your own pictures as possible and always consider this option when adding images to your articles.

You Can Use Paid Images

Sometimes I'll search the paid image sites if I need to find a certain photo type that I can't seem to find in my free options. The images are usually $1 or less per photo and you get a better price if you subscribe. High-quality images are important for your website, especially the main article image.

Some of the most popular social media sites like Pinterest and Instagram are successful just because they are completely visual.

Just keep in mind that with the content you get from "royalty free" sites, you will need to check the permissions for each image as one might have different rules for use than another.

How to add images to your WordPress website

Go to your WordPress website Editor.
Find the page to edit.
Find where on the page to place the image and click there.
Click the Add Media button.
Upload the picture from your files.
Fill in the Attachment Details - Title and Alt text settings - Use the keyword in the Title and Alt text boxes.
Display settings - choose the page location for the image, left, center, or right.
