The Shiny Object Syndrome in the Home Business Industry

If you've spent any amount of time online looking for legitimate ways to work from home and make money online, you've probably been exposed to hundreds of different business models. Some of these business models are legit and others are not.

Due to social media, the search engines and online advertising, a new issue has developed. I like to call it the "Shiny Object Syndrome." This syndrome has left some people depressed, others in financial ruins, and it's even chased others away from our industry altogether.

What is the Shiny Object Syndrome?

It is the promise that there is an easier, faster and cheaper way to make money online. It is a promise of done for you marketing. Just sit back, do nothing and collect a paycheck. It is the promise of "push button" profits. It is the promise of easy money.

The Truth

I've found that no legitimate online or offline business is fast, free or easy. Businesses cost money and take time to launch, grow and stabilize. Sadly, most people don't want to hear this.

Many people looking to make money online are in a tough financial situation and they are looking for that magic pill to solve their money problems today.

These ads promising "instant riches" do well because they appeal to people's greed. Many people want something for nothing. What these folks don't realize is that these "easy riches" do not exist.

My Advice to You

# 1 Find a Need in the Market Place

All successful businesses offer products and services that people want or need. There must be a legitimate demand in the marketplace for what you are promoting, whether it is a product or service. The demand can already be in place, or you can create a new demand by developing a new product or service that is unique.

# 2 Offer a Solution

Entrepreneurs provide solutions to their client's problems. We are solution providers. Our job is to identify a need and then offer a simple solution. The solution must provide value and solve your client's problem. If you can do that, you will make sales.

# 3 Put in the Time and Work

All businesses cost money to start, nurture and grow. More importantly, all businesses take time to grow. It takes time to learn the skills, learn from your mistakes, and figure out how to do everything you need to be doing. Once you start a new business, make a minimum two-year commitment and do nothing else during that time. Focus is key.

# 4 Avoid Shiny Objects

Put on your blinders. Avoid Shiny Objects at all costs. Focus on what you are doing. If you go down the path of chasing shiny objects, you will lose momentum, lose credibility and keep starting and stopping.

10 Legitimate Business Models

Some legitimate online business models, if done right, include:

Network Marketing
Affiliate Marketing
Blogging
Selling Items on eBay or Craigslist
Video Editing
Work as a Freelancer
Social Media Manager
Information Marketing
Sell Your Own Product or Service
Editor
Of course, not all of these business models will be a good fit for everyone. You have to pick something that aligns with your strengths, personality, skills, budget and available time.
The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that the Shiny Object Syndrome is alive and well, all over the internet. Your job is to find a legitimate way to make money online, get started, make a minimum two-year commitment and never look back. Do that and there is a good chance you will be successful.

Here are 37 Ways to Make Money Online. Learn more about the Shiny Object Syndrome in Network Marketing. Charles Holmes is a blogger, author and Network Marketing Professional.

Quit Dreaming About Your Dreams

Hmm, so a couple of years ago when I lived in the Atlanta metro area, I worked with children, adolescents and families that had children with a mental health diagnosis of some degree. The majority of the time I would meet and interact with them in the community, meaning, I would visit the kids at school or in their homes when their parents were present. I remember one particular young man that I had the pleasure of working with. And I remember one conversation that we had that is a very common conversation that I have with a lot of adults presently and they do not have a mental health diagnosis to my knowledge.

The young man and I were talking about some of the dreams that he had for his future; he told me that one of his goals or dreams were to become a professional basketball player and another dream was to be a professional dancer. Sounds like some pretty typical things a young man in high school would have right?

Well, here is the thing; these were truly heartfelt dreams and he was very serious about reaching and achieving his dreams. Our conversation quickly turned south when I asked him some reasonable questions. I asked him how many hours he spends playing basketball? "Not much" he said, okay. Then I asked him how much time does he spend working on his Free Throws? "I don't" he said, okay. Well, are you on the school's basketball team? "No, why would I do that" he said with a very puzzled expression on his face. Ookay!

He doesn't take dancing lessons or even watch YouTube to learn the latest dance moves; he told me that he just dances around the house all day. Now I know that I took some time to set up what I want to address but, I am sure that you can see where I might be headed.

Quit Dreaming about Your Dreams: It's Just a Fantasy

There are so many people that are having the same types of dreams and expectations that my young client had with me some years ago. For the record; his thought processes were not a result of his diagnosis. Many of my clients were given a diagnosis so the school system could remove them from the classroom because of some behavior issues or unfortunately, the guardian was attempting to get disability money from the government. Sad but true- but, that is a different blog post. Now, let's get back to you. The issue is not the dreams that he had and it is not necessarily your drams either. We all tend to have what would appear to be some pretty solid dreams and we are sincere in our desire to accomplish or reach our dreams.

But, just as my young client had dreams that he wanted to reach, he never spent any meaningful amount of time in the preparation of reaching the dreams that meant so much to him. There wasn't anything (no driving force) put in front of his desire to reach his dreams even though he wanted them so bad. No time playing basketball, no time practicing fundamentals, and no time developing the skills that he needed within a structured framework (school team).

Hate to burst some bubbles but, having a dream and making little to no effort or movement towards reaching those dreams besides just dreaming about them, well, it is just a fantasy. But, there is good news!

Quit Dreaming about Your Dreams: I Call it Sweat Equity

We tend to think that just the mere fact that we have a dream is all that it takes (this is all said in my excited fairytale voice). And as we continue to think about our little dream it will sense that we are dreaming about it. And as we dream about what it will look like when our dream comes true; it will begin to grow big and strong and one day, one day when we're not looking, it will "Blam!" appear and we'll dance holding hands and swing around in circles. Just you and your full grown dream spinning in circles in a field of lovely flowers and... nope!

There are some very practical things that we can do to ensure that we cultivate those gifts and talents that lay dormant inside of us. There are things that are required to take place in order for our dreams to become a reality. Take my client for example; if he had been spending hours on the basketball court honing his skills, perfecting whatever part of his game that was effective enough to give him an advantage over his peers and spent time practicing his free throws and jumpers. It would have afforded him an opportunity to make the school's basketball team and start the extremely difficult journey to the NBA. Sweat equity; plain and simple.

I'm not sure if any of you thought about this but, in my comical, slightly off-center and most of the time completely out in left field mind thought; most people don't read books about people who were born, grew up and went to school then to college. After college they got married, had a job and then died of old age. That is not a good read in my mind and I have already described what my mind looks like to you.

Quit Dreaming about Your Dreams: Is Your Life the Greatest Story Never Told?

When I ran my nonprofit for adjudicated youth, middle and high school students; I would often ask that question. I have made videos and written articles on that subject line. And I know that it's not my original thought or question but, the question still remains. Many of us will sit or live in quiet desperation and frustration because there are so many things inside of you that is fighting to get out and come to life but, we have no idea as to how do we get it out of us.

We are constantly searching to find out how we can be better versions of ourselves, we have become victims of life and all that it brings to the point that some of us have abandoned our dreams and settle for cheap knock offs! Working jobs that we hate and with coworkers that remind us constantly why we had the audacity to dream in the first place. We have fallen in line and we get on and off of the treadmill like hamsters. We try to fill those voids with fake imitations of what we are told is "The Good Life" but, in the back of our minds we know better.

So, is your life the greatest story never told? Are you the person that has the book that we've been waiting for, are the person that has the cure to the disease that is ravishing millions of people, are you the person that's referred to as "the modern Shakespeare"? What do you have inside of you that we so desperately need, what are you withholding from the world? I remember reading somewhere that says the richest place in the earth isn't the oil fields of the Middle East or the diamond mines of Africa. The richest place in the world is the local cemetery because it is full of people who died with all of the books, songs, inventions, medical breakthroughs, etc, who took those things with them to the grave!

So, is your life the greatest story never told? What are you doing to make your dreams come true? I believe that it is very difficult to make changes in our lives if we don't change the way that we think first. I mean, look at where you are now; what has changed about you since you started reading this awesome blog post?

Let's start with just formulating some sort of game plan on how and what we need to do in reaching our dreams. We can research Google for information, we can look into any education needed if applicable, and we can seek out a mentor to help us out along the way. We have to take serious inventory of who we are and who we want to be. As a Life Coach, I am constantly suggesting to my clients to identify what that really means to them. I am of the belief that we should be working towards becoming our authentic self-who we were created to be. The hardest part of your life becoming one of the greatest story lived out is; developing the ability to quiet all of the noise and chatter around you and focus!

Focus on the task at hand and ignore every voice that tells you that you will never make it. You have to become a human Salmon. You will have to train yourself to go against the flow, go upstream against the flow of "this is how everyone does it" and stay focused! If everyone could do it then it wouldn't appear so strange to other people who will never understand "why would you want to do that?" Are you strong enough to do that, are you willing to live a life that someone would want to read about? These are some things to think about as you hopefully begin your journey towards reaching your dreams. Quit dreaming about your dreams and begin to live a life that is the greatest story lived out.

Disappointment, discouragement and distractions can cause us to become stuck in life as we lose sight of our dreams and goals. For more information, please visit http://goo.gl/f3a7uz

Using Social Media Creatively to Tell Your Story

When it comes to marketing for your business, telling your story (even if it is one of many) is critical to your success in business. You must always have a story to tell and not only is how you tell the story important but where you tell your story is often just as important when it comes to achieving the desired results.

Why your story is so important

You may not be sure why telling your story is such a necessity when it comes to writing content and marketing that content for your business. Well, your story is absolutely critical to your brand's and your business' success because it is how you are able to connect with the other person as two human beings and it is also how you demonstrate who you are and the values that you hold dear.

When it comes to sharing your story, your chosen social media channels are a wonderful vehicle to do just that and to do it extremely successfully. Here is how you go about accomplishing that.

Tell your story on Facebook:

Your Facebook fans enjoy a good story very much. If your story is well written and compelling, your fans will have no problem reading your posts all the way to the end. That all depends on how you present the information. With Facebook, you have the opportunity to tell a really beautiful story and you can tell that story as elaborately or as succinctly as you wish. It just depends on your writing style and on your target audience members. If you feel that you have a lot to share with your fans, you may want to choose to write a longer post. Just remember to keep it compelling and engaging. If you do that, other people will want to read your story and they will want to keep on reading other stories that you share in the future.

Tell your story with images:

In many cases, a picture is worth a thousand words. Using images to tell your story is a wonderfully creative way to grab the attention of your target audience members. If you have experienced an event that you would like to share with other people online, images will probably work extremely well. You can post the photo album and it can be shared in its entirety subsequently many times and in many places. That will also make it easy for other people to share your story with other people whom they know (if they feel that your story is worth sharing). Your album should encompass the whole experience, including other people who attended who you fee had some significance, as well as any other photos (or other images) that were also worth sharing in your opinion.

Tell your story with a video:

Videos can be an extremely effective way to tell your story. Just as is the case with the written word, a video can be shorter or it can be longer. Don't be afraid to tell your story at length, if you feel that what you have to say will be of interest to other people. Of course, if you don't have a lot to say, there is no point in just dragging out your video just to take up minutes. Make sure that the amount of time that you take to tell your story is the most appropriate amount of time for what you have to say.

Tell your story using storyboards:

Another way to share your story is with a combination of words and images. It can be a very effective way to tell your story because it will appeal to many different people. Some people react more positively to the written word and others react more positively to images because they are visual people. The storyboard luckily satisfies both types of people.
Tell your story with a combination of original and curated content: You can take some concepts from curated content and combine those with your own story and experiences. It is a creative and effective way to tell your story and other people will be able to relate to what you are saying.

Conclusion

Telling your story is essential for your brand and for your business and using your chosen social media channels to tell your story is an intelligent, effective way to do just that. It helps you to establish a solid connection with your readers. The reality is that each and every time that you post content, you are sharing a story with your intended target audience. You are involved with social media on a regular basis for your business anyway so you may as well take full advantage of all that it has to offer you.

Keyword Research - Four Key Criteria For Selecting "Money" Keywords

Keyword research is absolutely essential to the success of any website because keywords are what people use to find websites and are what search engines use as the basis for their rankings. Good keyword research increases the probability that search engines will rank the pages on your website high for your target keyword; and bad keyword research (which often means no keyword research) will doom your website to the search engine cellars.

Since search engine visibility is a key factor in attracting targeted search referral traffic, the higher you rank, the more traffic your website will receive. Clearly, keyword research pays off.

In order to ensure you get the most out of your keyword research - and, in so doing, increase the volume of targeted traffic to your website - make sure that the keywords your research identifies meet the following four key criteria (work through them in the order in which they appear):

1. Relevance

Your keyword research time and effort must focus on identifying keywords that are relevant to your niche because relevance is critical to both search engine rankings and to the satisfaction of your end users (which, in turn, is obviously good for conversions).

If the overall theme of your website or blog focused on golf, you won't be doing yourself any favours if you target keywords that are not related to golf.

2. Probability to Convert

Your keyword research time and effort needs to ensure that the keywords you target are used by people who are highly motivated to take some form of action:

Click on a link
Download a report
Subscribe to a list or a fee
Request more information
Call or visit your business
Buy something online

As a rule, research has found that "long-tail" keywords - keyword phrases that consist of two, three or more keywords - tend to lead to higher conversion rates. The reason is simple: long-tail keywords are more specific than single-word keywords and often reveal a "probability to convert."
For example, a long-tail keyword phrase such as "download free keyword research software" is obviously more likely to lead to a conversion than a shorter keyword phrase such as "keyword research."

So even though search volume for long-tail keywords/phrases is lower than for more general keywords/phrases, people using them in their search queries are generally motivated to take action.

3. Search Volume

Unless, for some reason, you don't want or need an audience for your website or blog, your keyword research time and effort must focus on identifying keywords that have a satisfactory number of people using them in their search queries every month (what constitutes "a satisfactory number of people" is, of course, up to the individual and depends on his/her objectives).

To determine raw monthly search volumes for the keywords you're researching, head on over to Google's Keyword Selection Tool and do the following:

Specify the country or territory you're targeting
Select a language
Enter the keywords you're researching
Enter the Captcha
Click on the "get keyword ideas" button

After Google serves up the initial results, you'll want to narrow the keyword ideas by specifying "phrase match" for match type because it will produce a much more useful number - for our purposes - than the default "broad match."
Eliminate any keywords whose "phrase match" search volume falls well below the "satisfactory number of people" your keyword research says you need.

4. "Rankability"

The final criterion your keyword research must focus on is whether or not there is a reasonable probability that you can achieve a high ranking for the keywords you're planning to target because the only way you'll attract search referral traffic is if you rank at or near the top of the search results. Period.

While there are some fairly advanced ways to determine the "rankability" of the keywords you're researching, in the interest of simplicity we're going to go with a quick-and-dirty method that many people commonly rely upon: the number of other web pages that are "competing" for the same keywords that you're researching. To do this,

Navigate your browser to Google's homepage

Enter one of the keywords you're researching into the query bar (make sure you do a "phrase match" search by enclosing the keyword in quotes)

Click on the search button

If the total number of "competing" web pages - which will be displayed just below the query bar on the search results page - is less than 30,000, you've got a good chance of being able to capture a top ranking for the keyword for which you ran the search (it goes without saying that the lower the number of competing web pages, the better your chances are of achieving a top ranking for a particular keyword).

While this level of keyword research may require you to invest more time and effort than you're used to, your investment will pay off in the form of consistently higher search engine rankings for popular keywords that are used by people who are generally more motivated than most to take some kind of action after their search leads them to your website.

Which Is Better for Building Your Small Business: Pinterest or Instagram?

Discover which platform your ideal users prefer and how to you know if it's right for growing your business

Visual aggregator platforms for social media marketing really boil down to the two majors: Facebook-owned Instagram and Pinterest.

Both have their own way of presenting images and allowing users to compile images they like but they also have limitations that may push your ideal users towards the other option.

Growing your business with Instagram is a great idea but don't count Pinterest out.

The main appeal of Instagram is the images are supposed to be unique and even candid. Overly corporate posts seldom do well, and users don't want to see traditional advertising methods employed.

Pinterest allows users to curate images from anywhere online and on the platform.

The images are often very polished and professional. Traditional advertising methods are also seen a lot more on this platform such as how-tos and DIY posts.

Demographics will play a big role in your decision. Is your product or service more appropriate to women?

If so then Pinterest is for you. The most recent stats show within Pinterest user demographics that women make up over 70% of Pinterest users.

Pinterest also draws in a slightly older, domestic demographic.

What about services that are better promoted through a discussion? Are you a speaker who wants to show off a recent speaking engagement and create a dialogue around your expertise?

These make you an ideal candidate for using Instagram to promote your small business.

Remember this audience is a fair split between men and women and Western vs. International users. They like to see photos and videos of what you do or sell in action and they like to engage the poster if possible through the comments section.

The best business Instagram accounts show off your core brand identity.

Are you hoping to sell items through a post that links back to the page on your site with that product or service?

Instagram only allows one place a user can click through from. With IG you get one link in your profile bio. Whereas with Pinterest, you can link from the actual post like a traditional ad.

The big difference is how you intend to start your customer experience.

If they start with you at a brand level and you intend to use the entire account to create the first step in your conversion, Instagram is great. For anything where the user starts at the actual post level, Pinterest is going to be better for you.

It's something you can plan for if you haven't already.

Look at your ideal client as you defined them and evaluate the demographic information in your analytics. If you deal locally or even nationally to women and you're selling a product, then Pinterest is obviously the best option.

If your online marketing is about building a brand around your expertise and location isn't as important nor gender then you would be better served by Instagram.

If you can't nail down which would serve you better you can always try both!

Having the capacity to create content suitable to both platforms and manage both profiles is great.

If you do elect to use both a good rule of thumb is: Pinterest for images of what you're offering and Instagram for images of you creating those images.

If you make a Top 10 list with a polished image you can use that on Instagram as well but get lots of video and images of you creating the image that goes with that list and post those to Instagram!

Once you see better traction on one you can then focus your efforts on it.

Pinterest is a fantastic tool for many businesses but if your business is your brand and you're building your online reputation, Instagram is going to be a better option.

Vary your content but remember when users do follow you, they do so for a reason so don't stray from your core brand identity.

How To Set Yourself Free Using The Digital Economy

The digital economy is booming, and there's never been a better time to learn how to shift your income from trading time for money, to automating sales online to generate an income.

Many people simply aren't aware that this opportunity exists. Then there's the question of "how is this done?", and of course "can I do this?"

Some of the main resistances to change are mental in nature and overcoming scepticism is one of the main difficulties many face when presented with this idea.

It's far easier to shut down the possibility, than to have to make changes in your lifestyle and belief system in order to make it happen. But all belief systems and habits aside, how does anyone make a living on the internet, and over what timescale are we talking about?

A business model known as affiliate marketing lets anyone promote someone's product and earn a commission from it. You don't need to own a product yourself, talk to any customers or even handle any products. That's all done for you. All affiliates do is send website traffic to products and services they recommend.

Imagine you recommend a nice restaurant to a friend. Well, affiliate marketing is the same thing, only if your friend visits the restaurant and buys a meal, you'll receive a commission. The concept itself is fairly simple, it's the 'how' which is a little more tricky.

Putting that aside for a moment, just imagine how many people are on the internet looking for a particular product or service. There are millions! Just a small slice of those purchases is enough to get you out of a difficult working environment and working for yourself, from your laptop, from anywhere.

What's great about affiliate marketing is that you can compound your efforts over time. You can get adverts or content 'working for you' running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What's even better is the power of scalability. Once you've found a strategy which works, you can scale up to a global audience. With digital products, postage and storage isn't an issue. And you can earn up to 40% commission on digital products.

Let's back up a little and look again at the title of this article "How to set yourself free in the digital economy". What is freedom semantics aside, for many, it's the ability to create income without a boss, job or employer. It's the ability to earn money without feeling miserable or trapped.

Being free can mean many things. For the purposes of this article, it means being financially free and freedom to choose who you spend time with and how you spend your time. That's real freedom for many. It's often the opposite of working in a job you don't enjoy for the sake of financial gain, or, worse still, just to keep your head above the water.

But what does it take to build a life of freedom? Can you do it too? Not everyone can achieve this kind of freedom. The reason for most is a crippling belief system which keeps them chained to a 9 to 5 job, in a situation which doesn't serve them, because it meets some other needs. Security, ambition, status, duty or simply meeting your immediate needs are some reasons people don't venture out of what they believe is possible.

Of course an internet business can be built alongside a normal job too. That's one of it's most appealing benefits for many. But it's often someone's beliefs which stops them from even attempting to change their situation and circumstances.

So, an internet business is a means to set yourself free using the digital economy. By setting up small 'trickles' of income, by promoting and selling affiliate products, anyone can, over time, build an income which is completely independent of their time. Most people are trapped in the equation of trading their time for money. Affiliate marketing is a means to escape this trap and 'leverage' the internet to make sales, even while you sleep.

This doesn't happen overnight of course. It's a business like any other. However, an internet business can offer the ability to use automation and digital products to earn commissions. This has a two-fold benefit. Automation means your business can run without you. Digital products can be sold globally without needing postage or handling. Owners of affiliate products can afford therefore to pay affiliates more for the selling of these products.

Put all that together and you've got a huge robotic income machine - potentially. Once it's up and running, you simply need to 'tweak' it and scale it up. There's a lot involved in this process too. It's not easy and most people don't have a strong enough reason to make it happen.

But if your life is not working for you, you feel trapped or unfulfilled, an internet business can allow dramatic changes to happen in your life. Providing you work hard on your business, an on yourself.

Do I Have to Build a List?

Do I Have to Build a List?

One of the most common question asked by new online marketers is "Do I Have To Build A List?"

The truth is, there are many ways to make money online. Some make money through blogging, which involves getting readers hooked onto your blog content and wanting to come back everyday to read new stuff. While others dabble with e-commerce or drop-shipping.

However, if you are in the business of information marketing, it is highly recommended that you build an email list.

Why is that?

With an email list, not only can you continuously build rapport with your subscribers, you can also offer them products of interest. Traffic that comes and is not captured is a waste. People are looking for specific information and they will leave forever once they have found out.

However, if you manage to capture their emails, you can continue to provide value and turn them into your loyal customers or followers.

One more good reason – With an email autoresponder, you can automate emails so that new subscribers will automatically be funneled through a series of emails which will lead to a sale eventually. Can you say passive income?

How Do You Build a List Exactly?

How Do You Build a List Exactly?

So how do you start building a list, exactly?

You will first need to set up your list funnel. It typically consists of 3 components:

1) Landing page or Squeeze Page
2) Free Gift or “Bribe”
3) Opt in box

The landing page is a simple one page website which consists of a headline, sub headline, pitch & benefits and call to action.

The headline has to be eye-catching and bolded to immediately get your reader’s attention. The sub headline will reinforce the message of the headline.

The purpose of the page is to “bribe” a visitor to enter his name and email in exchange for a free gift. This could be an e-book, e-course or weekly newsletter.

The benefits are meant to explain what the reader would get from this free gift and to improve sign up rates.

Finally, in the call to action, you inform the reader that they must enter their name and email to get the free gift.

The place where the reader enters his contact information is known as the “opt in box”, which can be obtained from to email autoresponder host website. Autoresponders like Getresponse offer easy customizations for opt-in boxes to make boxes suit your site layout easier.

Alternatively, you can choose to put your opt in box in your blog or website to collect subscribers. The choice is entirely yours but landing pages often have higher opt in rates because visitors only have less choices – Opt in or don’t as compared to blogs.

Voila! You’ve just set up your list building system!

List Building - What's It All About?

List Building - What's It All About?

List building is an integral part of any online business. Just as how brick and mortar businesses keep record of their previous customers, the online entrepreneur has to collect the information of his visitors so that he can contact them again later on.

Therefore, huge focus must be placed on learning how to build a powerful mailing list so that you can continuously provide value to your prospects or customers at the same time monetize from them.

What is a list, exactly? Basically, it’s short for email marketing list or email autoresponder list. These emails are the contact information of visitors who come to your site who are looking for specific information on your niche topic.

In order to build a list, you will need to have an email autoresponder set up. The two most common autoresponders in the market are Aweber and GetResponse.

It is compulsory for anyone who wishes to start an online business to get an autoresponder account. This will be used to manage your subscribers and mass email your list with offers and information of interest.

Fortunately, these autoresponders come in different packages for big and small entrepreneurs, so choose your desired package wisely.

Once you have an autoresponder account set up, you’ll have to set up a business system for collecting leads or subscribers.
